Past and present projects

As a beginning seamster, I am trying to learn a new skill with each new project. So far, so good. I can check off:

1. Bias tape (Manhee Titus perfect skirt pattern)
2. Blind hem (Titus skirt)
3. Bacing, interfacing, invisible zipper, armsyce and gathers! (coffee date dress with the help of Grosgrain Fabulous totally took me to the next level. I owe you, elainemay!)

4. Raglan sleeves, muslin to adjust fit (bleah), matching plaids (fun!), lapped zipper (took me a WEEK), and reading a commercial pattern with no outside help. (The
ubiquitous Simplicity 3835)

Here's mine below- sorry, its a bad phone picture with a jacket over it, so you can't see my BRILLIANT plaid matching:

Ongoing:

1. A built by wendy disaster (Simplicity 3692) that is so hideous that one pattern reviewer compared to a nightie.

This is the first pattern I ever bought because it looked easy and comparatively cute.....

and even Williamsberg hipsterish.

But that was before I realized I bought the WRONG SIZE and a pattern that requires KNITS! ARGH! I guess everyone has newbie mistakes. Undeterred, I sliced up some navy and blue striped jersey, months ago, still not understanding what facing was, and realized that this could all go very badly. It's collelcting dust right now, partially cut out, we'll see.
Skills: grade patten up a size (though if PR is right, this pattern is drafted on the big side so this may be in vain), knits, regular sleeves- if I wind up doing view B.

2. Clothing clone of a tiny vest from H and M that will be in neon green.
Skills: working with slinky streach fabrics (not sure if its a knit- will take a photo and investigate.)

I've actually cloned clothing before, but not so successfully- A stiff kakhi skirt with a bustle attached by velcro from Paris was cloned into a slinky (mistake number one) gold brocade skirt. I chose the fabric because I got it for free from the man who ran the discount fabric store near the courthouse I was working at-who was hitting on me, I guess. (mistake number two.)The version I made was unlined, mistake number three)with a covered button to attach the bustle- idea borrowed from a wedding dress. I added an invisible zipper fairly successfully, but I skipped the facing(mistake number three), sewed by hand (mistake number four, but it wasnt too terrible) and had no idea about grainlines (mistake number five). It was so hideous that at the end although I wore it once, I never hemmed it (mistake number six) and avoided making clothing for another three years (mistake number seven).

Even so, I give myself an A for effort given that I tried such a complicated project with no idea what I was doing! Everyone should give that a shot sometime- it teaches you loads.

If I can find it, I'll post a picture!

3.Tara Dress from Burdastyle.
Skills-elastic casing
-matching patterns
-cap sleeves

I saw the amazing picture of the green version by verypurpleperson and fell in love:

... and tried to jump the gun and see if the shape worked for me before Grosgrain does their June Frock by Friday. Problem- I'm not shaped anything like miss purple- and I might just fall out of something this low cut. But I made a muslin before cutting into the Indian bedsheet I have in mind.

The muslin is actually deliciously comfortable, and makes me want to give it a shot! But, its a lot stiffer than the fabric she used, and may stand away from the body too much. so maybe the besheet is out? maybe this wants to be made in something with more drape? But who knows what that will look like? Again, the reason I hate muslins out of muslin- they dont tell you squat.

This week began with me having more finished projects than unfinished ones- I feel like I've entered the promised land!

So in honor of my finished to unfinished ratio....

4. I've started on the Marie skirt from Burda style in leopard print felt. (only after cutting it out did I realize that NO ONE makes clothes out of felt these days...we'll see how it works...)
Skills-felt, lining!

Here are some of the most fabulous versions:

How did I wind up with leopard print felt, you might ask? Craigslist.
I helped a nice lady destash who was giving up her dog clothing buisness. Only I would think that dog clothing material is good for people clothes...and I wound up with four and a half yards of this stuff. I was planning on using it for a jumpsuit for the playa, or, if my skills are not that advanced by August, at least some kind of skimpy halter top etc. party outfit for The Deep End like, for example:

But, now that this excellent daily 3pm electronic music dance party is no more, (Burning Man will never be the same!) I've reverted to planning normal clothes . If leopard print felt can ever be normal! Photos to come.
