So- This project started two years ago as a fashion photo blog- but I never took any photos, and I moved away from New York, where all the best candidates for street fashion are anyway :). But in doing so, I moved to what may be the friendliest city in the world for being a DIY diva. So now, my goals as a clothes horse, and as a blogger have changed with my address----and my sewing challenge begins.

I learned how to sew from my mom, grandmothers, and aunts- but only handsewing and embroidery. My first foray into clothing was in seventh grade, 1992, when I stayed up all night, trying to figure out how to make a scrunchie without the seams showing. Impressed classmates put in orders, I learned how to do a straight seam on a machine, and my mom took over the project, churning out scrunchies like a sweatshop...and these relics of a bygone era still seem to turn up in my suitcases, and drawers to this day.

In the intervening years, with only the occasional costume, emergency alteration, or disastrous experimental garment, I slowly formulated a plan for how to take the scrunchie success to the next level---

Then, armed with my New Home machine, and the inspiration of a dozen fabulous bloggers I began, in March, with my first wearable garment!

Special thanks goes to Male Pattern Boldness, who showed the world that there is no shame in using bedsheets, and the Selfish Seamstress for posting the most fabulous free pattern around, and finally, Deepika of Pattern Review- who not only has the distinguishing charicteristic of having the same name as me, but did such a service to all of us who are nervous to cut into that first pattern, or pretty fabric, because we want to know what it might eventually look like on a real person.
