If it fits...

Awesome post by so zo about homemade v. handmade. Ive been thinking about this myself... While I came to the idea of making my own because of sustainability reasons, I've been notoriously unconcerned with fit, and my fashion police friends (you know who you are!) have been at me for over a decade about this. Now, though I am learning what great fit can look and feel like, and Im trying to balance ideas about (im)perfect fit with (im)perfect finishing.

For example:
Some people avoid making collared shirts because its a lot of work, for imperfect results. But- being busty, Im always gaptastic. Maybe I can handle a little crooked topstitching if I can make one myself that fits the way it should.

Here's another example:

This- is my only designer garment.

I owe its purchase to living too close to too many consignment shops in NYC, a precipetous name drop by the cute salespeople, and going shopping drunk. It was an extremely good deal. It's also LOVELY. (even in casino lighting)

Talk about perfect-- I have no idea how to work with chiffon like this to save my life.
I can barely do a curved seam on cotton. But, since sewing my first wearable garment, I would never buy it. Its too long for me in the torso, and to big in the waist.

So, not as perfect as something I could conceivably make, someday...here's hoping...

  1. HAHA GAPTASIC! Shopping while drunk WAS fun, but i still would never smartly splurge like you do! The beautiful thing was you went for it on instinct and it worked out like a dream, even deserving of a blog posting! Keep it up! We are watching ;)
