Some preliminary pictures of my peacock extravaganza

So, These were the inspiration. Who leaves 40 peacock feathers on the street!? I can't even use them all. I might sell the rest on craigslist after I finish this costume...

For the bottom, I thought long and hard, and did all manner of silly things. (like trying to dye the white out of my batik fabric, by soaking it with the purple fabric I was planning on using for the top. All it did was make everything a little duller....)

but finally, tried to recreate the salwar chemise style drop-crotch bottoms. I cut the broomstick skirt in a random spot horizontally, to be the a drop-waist seam---at the hip line or so. I dont have pictures of my construction process, but here's a diagram of the cuts made:

Then, I took each of the rectangles I cut and sewed as follows, in order to make a pant leg.

I sewed each leg along the inseam, and basted and gathered the bottom to make them ruffley.

(hard to see here, sorry about that- will be easier to see once I model the finished product.)

and then sewed them together along the crotch seam,

then sewed them to the top part, creating a drop-waist seam.

Sound complicated? it was! there were some inside out legs and a lot of ripped seams, before it came out right...but I totally know how to do this the next time around!

Then I tried them on, realized that dropped crotch was absuredly low, and decided to make do by raising the waistband, as planned, to the bottom of the halter top, and sewed them together.

Then, I added a few feathers to the halter top along the neckline, like so.

and I sewed some of the leftover strands of feathers to the area of the bottom just under the bust, and along the legs like this:

And THIS is the super cute result! I might start collecting broomstick skirts just to make more of these, and then sell them in dolores park, or something. (sans peacock feathers.)

Wait a minute, you might say. Wont you be COLD?
yeah....I guess...so, dispite how perfect this is for dancing all night to dub step, Im going to need something to weather the bike ride there, and to wear at the work party...

sweater-to-costume refashion to come!
