To make ruffles, I cut long strips of fabric:

Then you set the machine to the longest stitch length. (note- you can sew by hand instead- and use a regular basting stitch.)

sew along the edge:

It will look like this when you are done:

Then sew another row of these long stitches right next to the first row.

Then grab a thread from both the top and bottom lines of sewing and pull:

and pull:

then move the gathers down the lenght of the fabric, and keep pulling, until you have a ruffle of the desired length.

tie a knot in the loose threads, both sids, to keep the gathers in place:

and you're done!

Here's another set I did, repurposed from a thrifted silk shirt

I cut the pleated parts off, of the shirt front and back, keeping the pleats intact:

These became long strips:

which became this!
